Spanish pilot
Spanish pilot
Description
The Spanish pilot, coordinated by FCC Medio Ambiente and Envico Research SL, focuses on the development and validation of solutions for the mechanical recycling of bio-based plastics from separate waste collection. The tests involve enriching the household waste stream collected with bio-based plastic fractions and then separating them using NIR sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms to identify and isolate different types of materials.
Once selected, the bio-plastic fraction recovered is sent to Envico for pre-treatment and subsequent mechanical recycling. This phase includes size reduction, washing, drying, and extrusion of the material to obtain new recycled bio-based plastic. The performance of the recycled material is then evaluated in terms of purity, physical properties and compatibility with virgin plastic standards.
The pilot demonstrates the possibility of integrating the mechanical recycling of bio-based plastics within current urban waste management systems, leveraging existing infrastructure.
